What is Juvederm?
Juvederm is a type of dermal filler--a substance injected under the surface of the skin to add volume and smooth lines and wrinkles. It is a smooth gel made of hyaluronic acid--a naturally occurring substance in the skin. In its natural form, hyaluronic acid is a liquid. "Cross-linking" is a process by which the liquid hyaluronic acid is made into a gel that can be injected into the skin for long-lasting results.
How is Juvederm Ultra different from Juvederm Ultra Plus?
Both Juvederm Ultra and Juvederm Ultra Plus are made of hyaluronic acid. Juvederm Ultra provides versatility in contouring and volumizing facial wrinkles as well as lips. Juvederm Ultra Plus is a more robust formulation for correcting deeper folds and wrinkles.
How is Juvederm used in a treatment?
Dr. Worth will ease the gel into the skin using a fine needle to temporarily fill in and smooth moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds such as "parentheses" (nasolabial folds) and "marionette lines". This adds volume to the skin to soften the signs of age.
Does it hurt?
Injections can cause some discomfort. Dr. Worth will work with you to decide upon the best kind of local anesthetic to minimize any discomfort.
How long does the treatment take?
The injection process takes between 15 and 30 minutes, depending on the area being treated. Dr. Worth will want to consult with you before the treatment to answer your questions and explain the process.
How long does Juvederm last?
The correction can last up to a year, but 8-10 months is more typical.
What are the possible side effects of Juvederm treatments?
Most side effects are mild in nature and include temporary injection site reactions such as swelling, bruising, itching, tenderness, and firmness. As with all skin injections, there is a small chance of infection.
Is there anything I should do before my treatment?
In the consultation process, Dr. Worth may recommend that you discontinue taking some medications that prolong bleeding or bruising such as aspirin, and other anti-inflammatories (i.e. Advil, Aleve, etc.) for at least a week prior to your treatment. Also, if you are prone to cold sores, Dr. Worth may ask that you take a suppressive dose of an anti-viral medication the day before and day of treatment.
How soon will I see results after having a Juvederm treatment?
You should see an immediate improvement in the treatment area. Supplemental "touch ups" may be required to achieve and maintain optimal results.
How much do Juvederm treatments cost?
Juvederm Ultra costs $500 per syringe. Juvederm Ultra Plus costs $550 per syringe. Most patients can achieve good correction with 1-2 syringes. Dr. Worth will work with you to determine the optimal treatment.
